Vol. 11, No. 14 July 23 - August 12, 1998

By Jules Ira Rubenstein

We asked people at the Grand Concourse and Fordham Road intersection:

"Would you prefer to see another store or a school complex occupy the vacant Caldor building?"

"I would rather see a school in that building, because it'll help education in the Bronx."

Michael Santana

"I think I would rather see another department store, for employment purposes,
for the community -- we could hire a lot of the unemployed in the neighborhood."

William Johnson

"I would like better an education center. There's enough stores in Fordham. It would be a good site --
you got transportation that's accessible to the students, so that would be good for them."

Lourdes Noboa

"We need more educational facilities, because a lot of kids don't really have a lot of options -- so we really need educational centers to show kids that indeed the way maybe out of the ghetto is through education."

Albert Williams

"I would like to see a store. It's good for business, you know. I'm a street vendor myself -- having people come by and shop over there, they come around and they shop with us too, so it's better than a school."

Joe Rios
