Four Favorite
Sons Honored by Tourism Council
The
First Annual Friends and Fame Ball, sponsored by the Bronx Tourism
Council at the Morris Beach and Yacht Club on City Island, honored
four of the borough's favorite sons, each of whom was also inducted
into the Bronx Walk of Fame during Bronx Week. At right, pictured
with Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer and Jose Ithier, head
of the Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation, is basketball
great Felipe Lopez, who still lives in the borough. Lopez plays for
the Vancouver Grizzlies and is the first Dominican-American drafted
to the NBA. Below, Norwood musician Ibrahim Gonzalez (left) jammed
with actor, and accomplished clarinetist, Hal Linden. Known best for
his long-running role as TV's Barney Miller, Linden has also
appeared in 18 Broadway productions. Also honored at the event were
radio legend Joe Franklin and actor Esai Morales.
The event, held on May 22, is part of an effort to give Bronx tourism
initiatives a higher profile. The Bronx Tourism Council, which consists
of more than 40 nonprofit member organization, is embarking on a number
of new projects to increase tourism in the borough. The Norwood
News will report on these efforts in an upcoming issue.
