Rolling on the
Bronx River
A
giant Golden Ball, created by the artists Mags Harries
and Lajos Heder, made its way down a 10-mile stretch of
the historic Bronx River (with a little nudge from river
enthusiasts) April 24. The ball, which traveled from
Bronxville Lake to the East River Estuary, was greeted by
over 30 community groups along the way, many of which
have been reclaiming the river and its shores through
cleanups, plantings, and other restoration activities.
The ball is a symbol of the sun, energy, and spirit of
the river. The colorful theme was personified by dancers
in gold outfits (below) from the Arthur Aviles Typical
Theatre who accompanied the ball on its entire journey
Canoes, rowboats and flutist Connie Grossman also
followed the Golden Ball. The Norwood News sponsored a
cleanup of the area just north of the New York Botanical
Garden. If you would like to participate in future
cleanup and restoration efforts, call the Norwood News at
920-6300.
