INQUIRING PHOTOGRAPHER

By Jules Ira Rubenstein

We asked people on Kingsbridge Road and Jerome Avenue:

"How can the police prevent tragedies like the fatal shooting of Guinean immigrant Amadou Diallo?"

"In the first instance, Police Commissioner [Howard Safir] has to be replaced for another one that has a little more sensitivity for the people. I don't think he's sending the best signal to the guys that are out there on the forces."

Angel Mañon

"They are there to protect people and not to chase people around. They should be really vigilant before they take action. There are bad people, and there are good people, but innocent people should not be made to suffer."

Bennie Akindelle, visitor from Africa

"The police should be more security-conscious. They should devise a very good strategy of combatting crime, rather than shooting indiscriminately. I think it's quite unacceptable, as an African."

Seth Ofori-Ohene, visitor from Africa

"There should be more cops around and more protection, especially the train stations. But [make] better training than what they're doing right now. Make sure they're really ready to become cops."

Juan-Carlos Gonzalez

"We need police to police the police. I think it's real wrong that they shot that man and he had no gun."

Charles Pinkney
