Armory Tour

About two dozen community leaders toured the Kingsbridge Armory
last week with staffers of U.S. Senator Hillary Clinton and Congressman Jose
Serrano. In organizing the tour, members of the Northwest Bronx Community
and Clergy Coalition hoped to build momentum towards the resolution of a
critical stumbling block to the armory’s redevelopment. Two divisions of the
National Guard are still housed in buildings to the rear of the drill hall
on East 195th Street. A new location must be found for them for work to
proceed.
Ronald Day, vice president for operations at the Economic Development
Corporation, led the tour, which ventured down two floors to the armory’s
sub-basements. He said that the main obstacles to relocating the Guard units
are determining whether one or both need new homes.
The congressional staffers said they would explore the matter further with
their bosses.
