Head Start Center Named for Msgr. Boyle

A new Head Start center on Hull Avenue in Norwood has been named for Monsignor Patrick Boyle, who served as a priest and as pastor of St. Brendan's Church for 29 years.

The center, to be known as the Msgr. Patrick J. Boyle Head Start Center, was dedicated on Nov. 20 in a ceremony attended by Edward Cardinal Egan, archbishop of New York.

"For many years, Msgr. Boyle has served this community as an exemplary priest of the archdiocese," said Egan, in remarks reported by Catholic New York. "We are all proud to be able to name this center after him."

Boyle, who was pastor of St. Brendan's from 1987 to 2002, is now pastor of Resurrection parish in Rye and regional vicar of Central Westchester. "This parish has been so close to me," Boyle said at the event, adding that he shared the honor with many who have served at St. Brendan's over the years.

The center is located in the former Mosholu Jewish Center, a synagogue that served the area for decades. Part of the center, located on Hull Avenue between East 204th Street and Mosholu Parkway, was set to open for 54 kids on Dec. 1.
Eventually, it will serve 200 kids in 10 classrooms on three floors. The Head Start program provides educational and child-care programs for 3- and 4-year-olds.

Children from St. Simon's Stock parish near Fordham Road performed for the occasion, singing "America the Beautiful," "God Bless America," and "Yankee Doodle." Eighth graders from St. Brendan's School also attended.
