INQUIRING PHOTOGRAPHER

By JULES IRA RUBENSTEIN

We asked readers what they thought of the MTA’s decision to offer discounted rides on weekends in December and other fare reductions in the light of a budget surplus.

“They should save that money for emergencies and repairs on the trains. It’s good, but look at the [bigger] picture here. They haven’t repaired half of the subway system. I’m not for it.”

Yvonne Torres

“It’s kind of hard to believe that there is actually a surplus. But if that is indeed the truth, then I’d say hold onto the money so we don’t have a fare hike.”

Elizabeth Salgado

“They should use the money for improvements. But if they’re going to give free rides, I think it should be to poor people who can’t afford rides, not just everybody.”

Raphael Pristoop

“It’s a good idea, but they should do it more often. These surpluses keep coming up all the time when we don’t expect it.”

Louis Hernandez

“Free rides are a good idea because it encourages riders to [see] all the wonderful things we have in New York City, including shopping and sights.”

Tom Marshall
