Stellar Season for Kennedy Knights

BY TANVIR AHMED

Fearlessness. This one word could easily be the motto of the Kennedy Knights this season. They have played very tough on their way to a 6-1 record and they could have easily been undefeated this season. Last year's Bronx champions have lived up to their name this season as well.

The Knights started the season with a win against a tough Curtis football team. The team's defense absolutely shut the opposition down with a 14-0 victory. In week two, their offense exploded for 46 points against Bayside. They won that game also with another solid defensive performance, winning 46-14. Week three was a heavily anticipated game because of the intense rivalry between Kennedy and Clinton. The Knights beat the Governors 38-20. Week four was a tough week for the Knights as they ran into a stumbling block, losing a squeaker in overtime to a perennial powerhouse squad from Wagner. They lost in overtime by the score of 22-20. In week five, Stevenson did not even show up for the game and forfeited. Guess they knew the Knights were coming.

Still angered by the close loss to Wagner, the Knights were hungry for redemption. It was also the battle of the Knights in week 6 since the Madison Knights have the same nickname as Kennedy. Kennedy won that competition, too, blowing their namesakes away 46-6. The final game of the season will be played against divisional rival Lehman Tigers.

The 2000 Knights remind me of the Super Bowl champions St. Louis Rams. Except the Knights know how to play defense. They scored 38 or more points four times this season. And they scored a whopping 208 points in six games played. Their defense has only allowed 78 points. The Knights are hoping to return to the glory days of the '90s when the team was PSAL team of the decade by making it to the championship game six times and winning four PSAL titles.

This year's team seems to have the right attitude to accomplish that. "We fear no team," said offensive lineman Jamel Williams, the team's captain. "We just come out to play each game." The Knights' strengths can be credited to both sides of the line, the experienced and sturdy offensive line and defensive line. Standout defensive players are tackling specialist linebacker Muttagi Windley and free safety Tyrone Thorn. Quarterback Morris Alavarez and running backs Victor Duran and Milton Anderson are holding up the offense. Also, you cannot leave out the expert coaching of Jerry Horowitz. He and his coaching staff have done an excellent job with the Kennedy Knights Football program. Year after year, they build a contender.
