A River Celebration
For the fifth consecutive year, the Golden Ball made its way down the Bronx River on
Oct. 11 with help from canoers. The event is a celebration of the river, and the
neighborhoods through which it flows.
Activities during the day-long event included a canoe procession, cleanups along the
river (including one near Norwood in the Bronx River Forest) and an afternoon celebration near French Charley's Playground and the Allerton ball fields. Bronx River
advocates, including Congressman Jose Serrano, faced off in a softball game against
Westchester Parks Department staffers. Westchester won 14-10.
Officials also announced restoration efforts in the Bronx River Forest. Funding from the
governor, the mayor, and local congressman Eliot Engel will be used to restore a flood
plain near the Burke Avenue Bridge, and to improve the Greenway in the forest. The
project will improve the pathways and add a boardwalk that will allow access to the river
even when there is flooding. The work will begin this fall and take about a year,
according to Elyse Leon of the Bronx River Alliance.
