INQUIRING PHOTOGRAPHER

By JULES IRA RUBENSTEIN

We asked readers if, after observing the aftermaths of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, they believed that New York City could be evacuated in an emergency

“There’s no way New York City can be evacuated safely — at all. I mean, after 9-11, we still haven’t learned a lesson. It would be pandemonium if we have any kind of terrorist attack.”

Ernestine Diaz

“We don’t know what might happen in New York City. It’s a chance that we all have to take. New York is so big that we don’t know if we’re all going to get out in time.”

Elizabeth Salcedo

“I don’t think New York could be evacuated in any manner. Looking at New Orleans, which had less people, they had the biggest problem in the world. We need a lot of talking and planning to do something if we did have some kind of catastrophe.”

Margaret Connelly

“New York City is well prepared [after] all the experiences that we have seen in other states. We’re prepared.”

Elsa Lopez

“New York would be able to handle it. There are a lot of signs around the area which would show people where to go. The people are [prepared] for a decision like that.”

Patrick Blake
