Bronx Week Events All Over Borough
Parade and Festival Along Mosholu

By HANNAN ADELY

Coming to a neighborhood near you: a week of arts, music, food and culture . The Bronx Tourism Council and the Bronx borough president's office is getting set to launch Bronx Week, a celebration of Bronx history and culture. With events throughout the borough, Bronx Week is themed "The Bronx: 61 Neighborhoods Strong." And this year, for the first time ever, the borough will also bring its annual parade to Mosholu Parkway on June 15.

The week-long festivities, which are being sponsored by Montefiore Medical Center, get started on Saturday, June 8 at the WORD Poetry & Music Festival with US Poet Laureate and Lehman professor Billy Collins at the College of Mount St. Vincent in Riverdale.

June 10 is Health & Fitness Day, with a workout, blood pressure screenings and health information on the steps of the Bronx County Building. June 11 is Business Day, and Citibank will host a free "how to 'workshop for the Bronx' small and medium sized businesses." June 12 is Arts & Culture Day, when the Bronx Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden, and other cultural institutions will open their doors free of charge. June 13 is Youth & Education Day with activities and health screenings at Mulally/Macombs Dam Park on Jerome Avenue in the South Bronx. June 14 is Tourism Day, where the Bronx' free trolley will have a three-hour tour of Bronx landmarks.

Bronx Week has its grand finale in Norwood on Saturday, June 15, with its annual Bronx Week Parade. The parade will move northbound on Mosholu Parkway, between Hull and Marion avenues, staring at 12 noon. The parade will feature Bronx-based organizations, baton twirlers and marching bands. There will also be a float for Bronx Walk of Fame inductees and a tribute to Sept. 11 victims and heroes.

On the southbound side of the parkway, from Marion to Hull avenues, the Bronx Council on the Arts and the Bronx Tourism Council will host Bronx Week's first Arts and Food Festival. Borough restaurants will sell food, and artists and art organizations will be on hand to display and sell their work and give out information. A stage near Hull Avenue will also feature a puppeteer, storytelling and a concert.

For the past few years, the Bronx parade was held further south, on the Grand Concourse between Mount Eden and East Tremont. '"The borough president just really wanted an area that would be easily accessible," said Naomi Rivera, who works for the borough president, about the move to Mosholu. '"He loves the fact that it's park and greenery. It has a family feel to it and a warm environment."

The borough president is considering moving the parade to a different section of the Bronx every year, Rivera added.
