INQUIRING PHOTOGRAPHER

By JULES IRA RUBENSTEIN

We asked readers for their thoughts on the controversy surrounding the ban on cell phones in city schools.

Cell phones shouldn’t be allowed in school. I’m a high school
student The phones
ring in the middle of class. It causes distraction in school. For those who have safety issues, they should get permission (to call) from the principal.

– Maria Martinez

For the most part, they’re a distraction
for the students. They text-message each other and use them
during school time. I’m
a teacher at PS/MS 20. It can be disruptive if it is abused.

– Christine Celentano

Taking cell phones away from students could be a safety issue. There are some kids that don’t live around the area of the school that they go to.
I was hurt once and couldn’t go to the nurse. I had to call from my phone.

– Sasha Hernandez

It’s important to have a cell phone with you. Say you have an emergency — how are you going to … get home? There are students that do really need it. The few that don’t … they should have them taken away.

– Cynthia Lopez

Banning cell phones is great. If a parent has an emergency, they can easily get in touch with the school. The children are getting a little bit carried away.

– Iris Lugo
