Celebrating the Subway
Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrión and top officials of the MTA boarded vintage
subway cars from the 1940s, '50s and '60s last week for the trip up to the Woodlawn
station on the No. 4 line. The occasion was to mark the subway system's 100th
anniversary and to celebrate the Jerome Line's extension to the north Bronx.
The Museum of Bronx History, at 3266 Bainbridge Ave., is also contributing to the year-
long observance of the centennial with an exhibit that opened on April 16 and will
continue through Sept. 5. Items in the exhibit include old wooden turnstiles, transit tickets
and subway etiquette signage.
The ceremony also marked the release of an illustrated MetroCard depicting the
construction of the northern section of the Jerome Avenue elevated line structure near
Mosholu Parkway.
