Plant Foes Protest on
Official's Doorstep
Two busloads of Bronx residents paid an unannounced visit to the Upper West Side home
of Christopher Ward, commissioner of the city's Department of Environmental
Protection, on March 27. Ward wasn't home but the protesters chanted, "We'll be back!"
and "The Bronx is not for sale!" a reference to a promise of parks
improvements traded to
secure lawmaker's permission to tear up the Norwood section of Van Cortlandt Park for a
water filtration plant. The action was organized by the Northwest Bronx Community and
Clergy Coalition.
