Signs of Spring
Signs of Spring
The warmth of the season may be on its own quirky schedule this year but nature is
taking its cue from the calendar nonetheless. The American pussy willow, seen here
(above) at the New York Botanical Garden in late March, flowers in early spring before
its leaves appear, according to botanist Margaret Falk. Visible here are the catkins,
clusters of male flowers, and the anthers, which are the yellow bits carrying the pollen.
And in another hopeful sign that the weather may become seasonable soon, the Mosholu
Montefiore Baseball League got under way with a parade (below) to launch its season
last Saturday.
