We asked readers if they favored legislation, currently being reviewed by Congress, to permit oil drilling in wilderness areas in Alaska.

“I think they should go for it. It will help us out a great deal. It doesn’t really affect me much, as Alaska to me is way up there.”

Doroda Lewandowski

“I have mixed feelings about that. Number one is the habitat for the animals. But we depend on too many others for oil, like the Arab countries or Venezuela. I feel sorry for the animals, but we’ve got to think of ourselves.”

Frank Soria

“There are two sides. It would be a good idea if it would lower gas prices, but it’s going to kill the wildlife. I’m not sure. If [President Bush] can guarantee that the environment would not be harmed, then I think it would be a good idea.”

Rachel Lopez

“I’m not in favor of drilling in Alaska. There’s already a lot of contamination occurring there, and more drilling will endanger the environment even further.”

Dean Papademetriou

“It’s a protected area. [President Bush] shouldn’t use his power to go through that. It’s not even necessary. Maybe we should invest in other energy sources, or discover new ones.”

Donovan Dwyer
