Stunning Season for Mount St. Ursula Basketball Team

Move over New York Liberty. Here come the Mount St. Ursula Bears! The varsity  basketball team at the Bedford Park school are 19 and 1 with only two games left to play.

The school spirit at the 147-year-old institution is palpable. "Every time we announce it,  everybody cheers," said the school's principal, Sr. Mary Beth Read. At the end of  February, the school will hold a pep rally before the March playoff season.

The school is no stranger to success on the court. In 1995, the varsity team was state  champion in Division D. And, in 2000, they topped all the Catholic schools in the state.

According to Read, the victories are especially sweet for Marjorie Prado, a senior who had to sit out all of last year due to an injury. And she scored the 1,000th point in her high school career last month.

Mount St. Ursula will take on Cardinal Spellman on Feb. 7 and Maria Regina on Feb. 10, both at the West Bronx Recreation Center, 1527 Jesup Ave.
