Vallone Checks Poe Progress
Also Tours Neglected Step Street

By Jordan Moss

At the invitation of the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition, City Council Speaker and mayoral candidate Peter Vallone checked on progress at Poe Park, which is undergoing renovations, with Pat Logan of the Fordham Bedford Housing Corporation (FBHC). When the work is complete this summer, Poe Park will have a new playground, decorative entrances and World's Fair-style benches. FBHC, which drafted the original renovation proposal, is trying to secure city funding for Phase Two of the project, which would include a Digital Visitors Center highlighting Edgar Allan Poe's life and the history of the neighborhood.

Vallone told the newest member of the Council, Joel Rivera, who was present for the tour, to keep tabs on the project and to make sure it's completed by July as scheduled.

"We'll make sure that this project is finished on time and we'll see what we can do about Phase Two," Vallone told Logan and Helen Hamer of the Ravens, a Poe Park volunteer group.

Vallone also took a walk down a neglected step street on West 229th Street between Sedgwick and Heath avenues with a youth group involved with the Kingsbridge Heights Neighborhood Improvement Association. Teenagers had raised the issue with Vallone at a previous meeting with the coalition. Vallone, who is pictured at top right talking to youth leaders Rose Guerrero and Jacqueline Gonzalez, said he would check to see if there was any money in the budget to repair the street, which has poor lighting and broken railings.

Vallone was impressed by the teens. "This is the kind of community activity that will result in some improvements," he told them.

Vallone declined to stop at the Kingsbridge Armory on his way to the step street, but promised the coalition his staff would set up a meeting with the group soon to discuss the future of the landmark facility.
