Engel and Whitman to Discuss Need for Filtration

Christine Todd Whitman, the new administrator of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, has agreed to meet with Congressman Eliot Engel to discuss the possibility of avoiding filtration in the Croton water system.

At a March 28 hearing of the Environment and Hazardous Materials Subcommittee of the Commerce Committee, Engel invited Whitman to inspect the potential sites for the plant in the Bronx and Westchester. Whitman may not be able to meet with Engel in the Bronx, but the congressman's spokesman, Joe O'Brien, said the meeting would probably take place in the next month or so.

The New York State Court of Appeals ruled in February that the city could not build the filtration plant in Van Cortlandt Park without the consent of the state legislature. The city is now considering other options including building the plant at another site in the Bronx or in Westchester. Engel and many local activists believe now is the time to reconsider the need for the filtration plant.
