Welcome
to Community Board #4
Our district is a great place to visit and an even greater place to work and live. Millions come to see sports at its best played at Yankee Stadium. Others take advantage of our tennis courts and track. Still others view the newest jewel in our City’s cultural crown, the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Both public and private sector employment is on the rise due in large part to the extraordinary efforts of Bronx Borough President Adolfo
Carrión, Jr.
Our is an ideal location for business and residents. We are in the very center of the metropolitan region, only minutes from Manhattan, New Jersey, Long Island and Westchester. We are the administrative center of the county, housing the office of the Borough President, the District Attorney, the County Clerk and the other courts. There is easy access through major rail lines, roadways and public transit, both surface and underground.
We are a community of contrasts. Sleek silhouettes of art-deco housing are a short stroll away from lovely homes, all at affordable prices. A community can only be as great as the people within it. We are counting on you!
BRONX CB #4 IS PROUD OF THE COMPANY
IT KEEPS…
And we are keeping many excellent companies in our district
and welcoming many more. Among these companies (business organizations)
are the New York Yankees, The H.W. Wilson Company, Santini Brothers, The
Bronx Lebanon Hospital Center as well as, Goodie Brand Packing, Plaza
Packaging, and a host of other industrial and commercial enterprises.
The above organizations are the cream of the crop, and are
internationally and nationally recognized in such prestigious fields
such as sports, publishing, city and countrywide moving, health care,
produce and designer packaging for assorted products.
All of these businesses know something that cannot be kept a
secret: that Community Board District #4 is in the heart of the Bronx,
which is the heart of the nation’s number one marketplace. Our
business can reach over half the consumers of the United States in less
than eight hours. There are five major airports and two key seaports
within thirty minutes of our district. Customers and employees can
easily reach our business via our public transportation system, one of
the most extensive in the world, or through our vast network of
highways, bridges and water routes. However one does decide to come to
Community Board District #4, we are reachable!
THE COMMUNITY BOARD
The Community Board consists of up to 50 unsalaried members
who live, work, or have a significant interest in the district. They are
appointed by the Borough President in concert with the City Council
members. The Board has an important role in dealing with zoning matters,
land use, the city budget, municipal service delivery, and many other
matters related to community welfare.
Community Board #4 meets on the fourth Tuesday of each month,
except during July and August, or when dates conflict with recognized
holidays. At these meetings, members address themselves to items of
concern to the community. Only board members may vote, but a special
time may be set aside for the public to speak. These meetings are always
open to the public. In addition, the Board may call a public hearing
whenever it deems it appropriate.
THE DISTRICT MANAGER
The District Manager is the chief administrative officer for
the Board and is a full time employee hired by them and serving at their
pleasure. He or she is a non-partisan, a-political, and a trained
professional manager. District Managers play many different roles. They
are at once municipal managers, ombudsmen, advocates, complaint bureaus,
and much, much more. One of the District Manager’s most important
tasks is to understand the process of the city budget and to present it
to the Community Board for review and action.
The District Manager prepares an annual Needs Statement and
makes frequent written reports and commentaries that are distributed to
public officials and civic leaders. He or she often makes
recommendations to the Board for action that may result in material
improvements for the district. The District Manager establishes an
office, hires staff, monitors city services and attempts to cut through
any red tape that may impede the delivery of services to the people of
the district.
AN INVITATION FROM THE CHAIRPERSON
Let me take this opportunity to invite you to apply for Board
membership through the office of Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion,
Jr. Board membership is much desired and so the waiting period for
appointment may take some time. Since the Board’s committees do most
of the planning and work, I urge you to actively participate now by
joining the committee of your choice.
You may apply for committee membership to the
relevant Chairperson via our District office.
