Rxs At Independents
Cheaper Than Chains. Surveys in two states have
confirmed what NCPA Members have long
contended--independent pharmacies often sell prescription
drugs at lower prices that chains. In Maine, a survey by
the Department of Human Services of prices for 15 frequently
prescribed drugs at 106 independent and chain pharmacies
found that the 10 lowest priced pharmacies (based on the
cost of all 15 drugs combined) were independents. National
chains had among the highest overall costs, according to the
survey. Interestingly, Wal-Mart price totals varied
widely--from $691.52 to $805.33 among seven locations.

In New York City, a survey
of pharmacies serving naturally occurring retirement communities
produced similar results. The Department of Consumer Affairs found one
chain sold generic Prozac (fluoxetine) for $30 at a pharmacy in Queens
and $82 at another in the Bronx. The survey concluded that, "Contrary
to conventional wisdom, independent pharmacies were often cheaper than
chains."
