Definition of a Monitor
and an Attendant:

School Bus Monitor/Attendant Package Includes:

A monitor is “Any person employed for the purpose of assisting children to safely embark and disembark from a school bus and for the purpose of assisting the school bus driver with maintaining proper student behavior on such school bus."

An Attendant is "Any person who is employed for the purpose of serving pupils with a disabling condition on a school bus."
           --as defined by the New York State
             Education Department

Does the course include hands-on practice? YES*

What are the responsibilities of a MONITOR? Safety of children: maintains reasonable order
   on the bus; makes sure no child is left on
   board.
The importance of loading and unloading safety
   - protects children when loading and unloading;
   most school bus fatalities occur when children
   are getting on or off the bus
Effective communication: with the bus driver;
   teaches children safety procedures; files
   written referrals.
Reliability: excellent attendance and
   punctuality; refrains from drugs and alcohol.
Professional attitude: courteous to all; sensitive
   to children’s needs; can relate to children from
   diverse backgrounds; doesn’t eat, drink, or
   smoke on bus; good hygiene and neat dress.
Successful student management on a bus
   requires a team approach from both adults
   and prevent behavioral problems
Never ask to be let off before the end of the
   route – children’s safety should never be
   compromised for adult convenience
Knows laws and regulations
Learn the characteristic of each disabilities –
   such as Autistic, Emotionally Disturbance,
   Learning Disorder, Multiple Disorder
Evacuation procedure in case of emergency –
   determine the best exit before beginning
   evacuation; when to evacuate the bus;
   techniques to follow to achieve a successful
   evacuation

   Practice on a school bus loading and
      unloading procedure with a wheelchair
   How to secure a wheelchair on the bus
      with different securement devices
   Practice evacuation procedure
   How to assemble emergency reflectors
      triangles
   Installation of car seats on the bus
   Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
      segment will be practice with manikins
   Control bleeding techniques practice
   How to fill in a proper behavior report
   How to use a MAP

School Bus Drivers
INITIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Commercial Drivers License (B)
   with Endorsements:
          P for Passenger
          S for School
School Bus Driver Basic 30 Hour
   Class
Must be 21 Years Old
Male or Female
