A BRONX neighborhood rocked this year by
the brutal death of a 4- year-old boy, allegedly at the
hands of his mother's boyfriend, is responding Friday with a
forum on child abuse.
Anthony Rivieccio, director of a resident
and merchant activist group, said he organized the free
educational event after talking with people distressed by
the January murder of Quachaun Browne in a squalid Norwood
apartment.
Browne's death closely followed the
brutal abuse of Nixmary Brown, whose highly publicized death
brought the city's child welfare system under fire.
"People felt they wanted to talk about
it, to discuss it, to vent," said Rivieccio, director of The
Committee of 100, a grass- roots civic justice organization
co-hosting the event with Lovey Rivera, principal of Middle
School 80.
"We wanted to put together a place to
inform and educate people about child abuse," Rivieccio
said. "The goal is to let people know that help is only an
arm's reach away in our community."
The six-hour forum will take place in the
MS 80 auditorium at 149 E. Mosholu Parkway.
At 3 p.m., Karel Amaranth, director of
the Child Advocacy Center at Montefiore Medical Center, will
discuss services for victims of sexual or physical abuse, as
well as warning signs of abuse.
At 4 p.m., City Councilman Oliver Koppell
(D-Riverdale), state Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz,
Assemblywoman Naomi Rivera and Tamiko Amaker of the Bronx
district attorney's office will discuss child abuse, the law
and the Administration for Children's Services.
At 5 p.m., Lucy Aponte, director of
Living and Learning by the Arts, will discuss hidden forms
of child abuse and the use of art to improve parenting.
At 6 p.m., Bronxtalk host Gary Axelbank
will moderate a Mother's Roundtable discussion about child
abuse.
At 7 p.m., Jeff Ecker of the Bronx-based
Project Whoopee Humane Society will discuss how pet abuse
often coincides with child abuse.
There also will be information tables set
up by groups including The Riverdale Mental Health
Association, Community District Education Council 10, First
Step Woman Support Group, It Takes a Village and Crusaders
for Children's Rights.
