New York Agencies join
community groups to spur Job Employment in North Bronx

Now, it is a real Bronx Jobs Weekend. Workforce1 Career
Services, one of the leading New York City business employee
providers, is coming up to The North Bronx to assist in the
encouragement of North Bronx Residents, at work.
Susan Banks, Bronx Director of workforce1, called Executive
Director of North Bronx Thinktank and asked for full
participation in their collaboration with The Department of
Environmental Protection (DEP) and other community
organizations.
Workforce1 provides direct assistance to business owners, foster
neighborhood development in commercial districts, promote
financial and economic opportunity among minority and
women-owned businesses, prepare New Yorkers for jobs and link
employers to a skilled and qualified workforce. Workforce
Development is a relatively new responsibility for the
Department of Small Business Services. In an effort to link, the
City is economic and workforce development initiatives, Mayor
Bloomberg took an unprecedented step in July 2003, and
consolidated the Department of Employment and the Department of
Small Business Services.
After two recent reports have shown a huge increase in Bronx
Unemployment, especially within The Department of Environmental
Protection, community organization huddled together and joined
Community Board 7 Chair, Gregory Faulker in asking for “an
action plan of employment by October”.

North Bronx Thinktank, Patricia Woods from First Step Woman’s
Support Group & Phyllis Reed from “It takes a Village” believe
collaborating with City Agencies’ is a vital first step.
“Let’s be frank. Bronx Unemployment comes from many factors,
says Anthony Rivieccio, and one way is by government inaction.
We have asked the city to get out of their Manhattan Offices and
join us in The North Bronx for the weekend. We have received a
tremendous preliminary response. It would be nice to assist in
more quality Bronx Jobs”.

Riverdale Press recent report says that The DEP (under Phase 2
of the Water Plant in Norwood) should provide the perfect
opportunity for construction jobs. “We want to start a community
plan because we see the city clearly does not have one”, says
Elizabeth Thompson
Patricia Woods, from First Step says, “workforce 1 will be the
final piece to provide many quality retail jobs & training to
The Bronx”.
You can pick up a general application and more information at
the office of Kingsbridge Heights, 2805 University Ave, and
Friday September 22, from 12-1 & from 6-7PM. All applicants will
have a meeting with a City Representative to look at your resume
and have a first job interview on Monday, Sept 25.
Workforce1 Career Centers are a partnership
of agencies and organizations working together to provide a full
array of free job training, recruitment, and placement services.
